Silicon Carbide occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Natural Moissanite is Extremely Rare. Do not expect to find natural moissanite in the field. It is a mineralogical curiosity, primarily found in microscopic grains within specific geological matrices or meteorites. Any larger specimens are almost certainly synthetic.
2. Distinguishing from Diamond. While moissanite has a similar appearance to diamond, it exhibits higher birefringence (double refraction), which can be observed with a loupe. It also has a higher dispersion (fire) than diamond. Thermal conductivity testers used for diamonds will often give a 'diamond' reading for moissanite due to its high thermal conductivity, so specialized moissanite testers are needed for accurate differentiation.
3. Safety Precautions for Synthetic SiC. When handling synthetic silicon carbide, especially in powdered or abrasive forms, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including dust masks (N95 or higher) to prevent inhalation of fine particles, safety glasses, and gloves. Silicon carbide dust can be an irritant to the respiratory system and eyes. While not classified as a carcinogen like crystalline silica, prolonged exposure to fine particulate matter should be avoided.
4. Collecting Synthetic SiC. Synthetic silicon carbide is readily available from industrial suppliers or as gemstone simulants. Collectors interested in its crystalline forms can often find well-formed hexagonal plates or iridescent aggregates from scientific supply houses or mineral dealers specializing in synthetic materials.
