Where to find Geode
Keokuk Geode Beds, Iowa, USA
Famous for large, high-quality geodes, often containing quartz, calcite, dolomite, and pyrite, found in Mississippian-age limestones and shales.
Brazil
Known for producing massive amethyst geodes, particularly from the Paraná Basin, often found in basaltic flows.
Mexico
Various locations, including Chihuahua, produce geodes with diverse mineral fillings, including amethyst, calcite, and gypsum.

Collecting tips
- Look for spherical or ovoid shapes. Geodes often have a distinct rounded or potato-like shape, which can differentiate them from surrounding angular host rock.
- Check for a 'rattle'. Smaller geodes, especially those with loose crystals or internal water, may produce a rattling sound when shaken. This is not always present but can be a good indicator.
- Examine weathered outcrops. Geodes are often more resistant to weathering than the surrounding host rock, causing them to stand out or be found loose in stream beds and eroded areas.
- Tap with a hammer. A geode may produce a dull, hollow sound when tapped, as opposed to the solid thud of a regular rock. Exercise caution and wear safety glasses.
- Research local geology. Knowing the specific geological formations and rock types in an area known for geodes will significantly increase your chances of finding them.
