Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic and Alluvial Deposits. Moss Agate is commonly found in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in weathered basalt flows, or in riverbeds and gravel deposits where it has been eroded from its primary source.
- Examine for Translucency and Inclusions. Search for translucent to semi-transparent nodules or fragments that exhibit distinct moss-like or dendritic patterns when held up to light. The inclusions are key to identification.
- Check for Hardness. As a form of chalcedony, Moss Agate has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, meaning it will scratch glass and steel. This helps differentiate it from softer minerals.
- Observe Fracture. Moss Agate exhibits a conchoidal fracture, producing smooth, curved surfaces similar to broken glass.
