Where to find Carnelian Agate
India (Maharashtra, Gujarat)
Historically significant source, particularly for high-quality, deep red carnelian. Deposits are often found in Deccan Trap basalts.
Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul)
Major producer of various chalcedony varieties, including carnelian, often associated with basaltic flows.
Uruguay
Known for agate and carnelian deposits, similar to those in Brazil, often found in volcanic rocks.
Madagascar
Produces good quality carnelian, often found in alluvial deposits.
United States (Oregon, Washington, California)
Various localities yield carnelian, often in volcanic terrains or associated stream gravels.
Germany (Idar-Oberstein region)
Historically a major cutting and polishing center for carnelian, though much of the raw material was imported.
Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Search for areas with weathered basalt, andesite, or rhyolite, particularly where these rocks have vesicles or fractures that could host chalcedony.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Carnelian is durable and often survives weathering, accumulating in riverbeds, stream gravels, and beach sands downstream from primary volcanic sources.
- Examine Nodule Shapes. Carnelian often forms as rounded or irregular nodules. Look for these distinctive shapes in exposed rock or loose sediment.
- Observe Translucency and Color. Hold suspected pieces up to a light source to check for translucency and the characteristic reddish-orange hue. The color can be more vibrant when wet.
- Test Hardness. Carnelian is relatively hard (Mohs 6.5-7). It will scratch glass and steel, but not quartz. This helps differentiate it from softer minerals.
