Where to find Moss Agate
India (Deccan Traps)
Historically a major source, particularly from the region around Mocha, Yemen (though the material originated from India), hence the 'Mocha Stone' moniker. Found in basaltic flows.
United States (Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon)
Montana is famous for its 'Montana Moss Agate,' often found in alluvial deposits derived from volcanic rocks. Other western states also yield significant quantities.
Brazil
Known for various forms of agate, including some with moss-like inclusions.
Uruguay
Another significant source of agate, often found in geodes and nodules within volcanic rocks.

Found in various localities, often associated with volcanic terrains.
Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Moss Agate is frequently found in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in weathered basalt flows or in stream beds and gravels derived from such areas.
- Search for Agate Nodules and Geodes. It can occur as fillings within amygdales (gas bubbles) in volcanic rocks or as nodules and geodes in sedimentary environments.
- Examine Riverbeds and Alluvial Deposits. Water erosion often liberates agates from their host rock, concentrating them in river gravels and alluvial fans. Look for rounded, translucent pebbles.
- Check for Translucency and Inclusions. Hold potential specimens up to light to check for translucency and the characteristic dendritic patterns within the chalcedony.
