Dendritic Agate occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Dendritic Agate

Brazil

Known for producing large quantities of high-quality dendritic agate, often with clear chalcedony and distinct black manganese dendrites.

India

A significant source, particularly for material with fine, intricate patterns.

United States (Oregon, Washington, Montana)

Various localities produce dendritic agate, often associated with volcanic activity. Oregon is particularly known for its 'Picture Agate' which can include dendritic patterns.

Madagascar

Produces material with good clarity and well-defined dendrites.

Kazakhstan

Known for some unique varieties of dendritic agate.

Australia

Found in various regions, often associated with opal and other silica deposits.

Collecting tips

  1. Look in Volcanic Terrains. Search for areas with weathered volcanic rocks, especially basalts and rhyolites, where geodes, nodules, or vein fillings might be exposed.
  2. Check Stream Beds and Gravel Pits. Agate is durable and often survives weathering, accumulating in secondary deposits like river gravels. Look for rounded, translucent pebbles.
  3. Examine Host Rock Cavities. In situ, dendritic agate often forms in vugs, amygdules, and fractures within the host rock. Look for signs of silica mineralization.
  4. Distinguish from Moss Agate. Dendritic patterns are typically sharp, branching, and two-dimensional, resembling ferns or trees. Moss agate inclusions are more diffuse, three-dimensional, and resemble moss or lichen.

Quick Check

Color:
Translucent to opaque white, gray, or colorless with black, brown, or reddish-brown fern-like patterns.
Luster:
Waxy to vitreous.
Streak:
White (for the chalcedony matrix).
