Where to find Dendritic Chalcedony

Collecting tips

1. Look in Volcanic Terrains. Search for amygdaloidal cavities in weathered basalt or other volcanic rocks, as these are common sites for chalcedony formation.
2. Check Sedimentary Deposits. Explore areas with chert or jasper nodules, as dendritic patterns can sometimes be found within these silica-rich concretions.
3. Examine Hydrothermal Veins. Look for veins and fractures in host rocks that show evidence of past hydrothermal fluid flow, as chalcedony often precipitates in these environments.
4. Break Open Geodes and Nodules. Dendritic patterns may be revealed when breaking open chalcedony-filled geodes or nodules.
5. Observe for Color Contrast. The dark dendrites are usually visible against the lighter chalcedony matrix, making them somewhat identifiable even in rough specimens.

Quick Check

Color:

White, gray, blue, or brown matrix with black or dark brown/reddish-brown fern-like patterns.

Luster:

Waxy to dull.

Streak:

White (for chalcedony matrix); dendrites typically do not produce a distinct streak on unglazed porcelain due to their small size and hardness, but manganese oxides would be dark brown/black.
