Where to find Dyed Agate

Collecting tips
- Examine Color Uniformity. Natural agate colors are typically more subdued and vary subtly. Unnaturally bright, uniform, or 'electric' colors are strong indicators of dyeing. Look for color concentrations in cracks or along banding that seem too perfect or intense.
- Check for Dye Residue. Sometimes, especially in lower quality dyeing, residual dye can be seen in surface imperfections or micro-fractures, or even on the surface if not properly cleaned.
- Consider the Price. Dyed agate is generally less expensive than natural agate of comparable size and quality, especially for rare natural colors. However, some highly processed or intricately carved dyed pieces can still command a good price.
- Consult a Gemologist. If in doubt, a professional gemologist can often identify dyed material through microscopic examination or other gemological tests.
