Collecting tips
- Look for Nodules. Geodes often appear as rounded or irregularly shaped nodules in exposed rock faces, stream beds, or weathered soil. They may feel lighter than solid rocks of similar size due to their hollow interior.
- Check Host Rock Types. Focus your search in areas known for volcanic rocks (basalt, rhyolite) or specific sedimentary formations (limestone, shale) that are prone to geode formation.
- Listen for a Hollow Sound. Gently tap suspected geodes with a hammer or another rock. A hollow sound can indicate a geode, though this is not always reliable.
- Examine Weathered Areas. Erosion often exposes geodes. Look in gullies, road cuts, stream banks, and agricultural fields after rain.
- Safety Precautions. When collecting, always wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection and gloves. Be aware of your surroundings and obtain permission before collecting on private land.
