Quartz Sandstone occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Look for gritty texture. Rub the rock gently; if it feels like sandpaper or individual grains are discernible, it's likely sandstone. If the grains are predominantly clear or milky, it's likely quartz sandstone.
2. Observe grain rounding and sorting. Well-rounded and well-sorted grains often indicate a mature quartz sandstone, suggesting extensive transport and reworking.
3. Check for hardness. Quartz grains are hard (Mohs 7). While the rock as a whole might be less hard due to cement, individual grains will resist scratching with a steel knife.
4. Examine color variations. Note the color, as it can indicate the type of cementing material (e.g., red/brown for iron oxides, white/gray for silica or calcite).
5. Consider the geological context. Sandstone is common in sedimentary basins, ancient riverbeds, beaches, and desert environments. Look for layered sedimentary structures.
