Where to find Red Jasper
India
Significant deposits, particularly in the Deccan Traps region.
United States
Found in various states including Oregon, Idaho, California, Arizona, and Washington, often in volcanic or sedimentary contexts.

Known for large deposits, especially in Western Australia, often associated with ancient banded iron formations.

Collecting tips
- Look for Sedimentary Environments. Red Jasper is commonly found in areas with ancient sedimentary rocks, especially those associated with iron-rich deposits or volcanic activity. Riverbeds and gravel pits can also yield water-worn specimens.
- Identify Associated Minerals. Often found alongside other forms of chalcedony, chert, or in association with iron ores. Look for areas with reddish-brown staining in the soil or rock outcrops.
- Check for Hardness. As a form of quartz, Red Jasper is relatively hard (Mohs 6.5-7). It will scratch glass and steel. This helps differentiate it from softer red minerals.
- Observe Fracture. Freshly broken surfaces will exhibit a conchoidal (shell-like) fracture, characteristic of cryptocrystalline quartz.
- Consider Polishing. Unpolished Red Jasper can appear dull. Polishing reveals its characteristic waxy luster and enhances its color and patterns.
