Collecting tips
- Look in Sedimentary and Volcanic Terrains. Red Jasper is commonly found in areas with ancient sedimentary rock formations, especially chert beds, and regions with past volcanic activity where hydrothermal fluids were prevalent.
- Identify Associated Minerals. Often found alongside other forms of chalcedony, quartz, and iron-rich minerals like hematite or goethite.
- Check for Opaque, Red Material. Look for dense, opaque, reddish material that breaks with a conchoidal fracture. It will not scratch with a steel knife.
- Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Water-worn pebbles of Red Jasper can be found in riverbeds, stream gravels, and glacial till, as it is quite durable.
