Garnetiferous Metamorphic Rock occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Garnetiferous Metamorphic Rock

Appalachian Mountains, USA

Extensive regional metamorphic belts with abundant garnet-bearing schists and gneisses.

Himalayan Orogen, Asia

High-grade metamorphic rocks, including garnet-staurolite and garnet-kyanite schists and gneisses.

Fennoscandian Shield, Europe

Ancient Precambrian metamorphic complexes with various garnet-bearing lithologies.

Western Gneiss Region, Norway

Known for high-pressure metamorphic rocks, including garnet-bearing gneisses and eclogites.

Adirondack Mountains, USA

High-grade metamorphic rocks, including garnet-rich gneisses.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Porphyroblasts. Garnet often forms distinct, equant, and typically reddish crystals that stand out from the surrounding matrix. These are called porphyroblasts.
  2. Examine Foliation. Many metamorphic rocks containing quartz and garnet will exhibit foliation (a planar fabric). Look for the alignment of platy minerals like micas, which will wrap around the harder garnet crystals.
  3. Check Hardness. Garnet is relatively hard (6.5-7.5 on Mohs scale), and quartz is also hard (7). This can help distinguish them from softer minerals in the matrix.
  4. Consider Geological Context. These rocks are found in areas that have undergone significant regional metamorphism, often associated with mountain building events.

Quick Check

Color:
Variable, often with reddish-brown to red garnet crystals in a lighter (quartz-rich) or darker (mica-rich) matrix.
Luster:
Vitreous (quartz and garnet) to pearly/silky (micas).
Streak:
White (for both quartz and garnet).
