- Identify Metallic Luster. The distinct metallic luster and brassy yellow color of pyrite and chalcopyrite are key indicators. Chalcopyrite's iridescent tarnish can also be a good sign.
- Check for Associated Minerals. Often found with other sulfide minerals (e.g., sphalerite, galena, arsenopyrite), carbonates (e.g., calcite, dolomite), and other silicates (e.g., sericite, chlorite).
- Geological Context is Key. Understanding the regional geology and known occurrences of ore deposits will significantly aid in locating this assemblage.
