Where to find Iron-Stained Quartz
Worldwide
Due to the ubiquitous nature of quartz and iron, iron-stained quartz can be found in virtually any geological setting where these conditions overlap. Notable occurrences include quartz veins in mining districts (e.g., Colorado, USA; Brazil), sedimentary basins (e.g., various sandstone formations), and weathered igneous or metamorphic terrains.

Known for large quartz deposits, often exhibiting various forms of iron staining, particularly in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins.
Arkansas, USA
Famous for its clear quartz crystals, many of which can be found with superficial iron staining, especially in weathered outcrops.
Collecting tips
- Look for weathered outcrops. Iron staining is often more pronounced in areas exposed to weathering, where iron minerals have oxidized.
- Examine quartz veins. Hydrothermal quartz veins, especially those associated with sulfide mineralization, are common sites for iron staining.
- Check sedimentary rocks. Quartz grains in sandstones and conglomerates can be coated with iron oxides, giving the rock a reddish or yellowish hue.
- Cleaning. Mild oxalic acid solutions can sometimes remove superficial iron staining, revealing the underlying quartz. However, this should be done with caution and proper safety equipment, as oxalic acid is corrosive.
