India (Deccan Traps)
Historically a major source, particularly the Mocha region, giving rise to the 'Mocha Stone' moniker. Known for high-quality green moss agate.
United States (Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington)
Montana is famous for its 'Montana Moss Agate,' often found in alluvial gravels of the Yellowstone River, characterized by black and reddish-brown dendritic patterns. Other states produce various forms.

Another major source of agate, including moss agate, often associated with basaltic flows.

Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Moss Agate often forms in the vesicles and fractures of ancient volcanic rocks like basalt and andesite. Search in areas with exposed volcanic flows.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Due to its hardness and resistance to weathering, Moss Agate can be found in riverbeds, gravel bars, and alluvial fans, often as water-worn pebbles or nodules.
- Examine Geodes and Nodules. Moss Agate can occur within geodes or as solid nodules. Look for rounded or irregular masses that may contain agate when broken open.
- Identify by Translucency and Inclusions. The key identifier is the translucent chalcedony matrix with distinct, often green, black, or reddish, moss-like or dendritic patterns. Hold specimens up to light to observe the internal structures.
- Hardness Test. As a form of quartz, Moss Agate will scratch glass (Mohs hardness 7). This helps distinguish it from softer minerals.
