Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Focus on areas with ancient or recent volcanic activity, particularly where basalt or rhyolite flows are present. Look for geodes or vugs in these rocks.
- Check Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Agate nodules are often weathered out of their host rock and transported by water. Riverbeds, stream beds, and gravel pits can be good places to find tumbled pieces.
- Examine Road Cuts and Construction Sites. Freshly exposed rock faces can reveal agate-bearing formations.
- Identify Host Rocks. Learn to recognize common host rocks for agate, such as weathered basalt, rhyolite, or certain limestones. The agate will often be found within cavities or as veins.
- Look for Translucency. Hold potential specimens up to a light source. Dendritic agate will often show some degree of translucency, allowing the internal patterns to be seen.
