Collecting tips

1. Look for Fractures and Fissures. Dendrites often form along existing fractures, bedding planes, or micro-fissures within the quartz or host rock. Examine exposed rock faces for these features.
2. Examine Weathered Surfaces. Weathering can sometimes expose or highlight the dendritic patterns, making them more visible on the surface of rocks.
3. Check Manganese-Rich Environments. Areas known for manganese mineralization or rocks with a history of manganese-rich fluid circulation are good places to search.
4. Use a Hand Lens. A hand lens or loupe can help to discern the intricate patterns of the dendrites, especially in smaller specimens or less obvious occurrences.
5. Distinguish from Fossils. Remember that dendrites are inorganic mineral growths, not actual plant fossils. Their two-dimensional, often flat appearance within the rock is a key differentiator.

Color:

Clear to milky quartz with black, fern-like patterns.

Luster:

Vitreous (glassy) for quartz, dull for dendrites.

Streak:

White for quartz; black to brownish-black for manganese oxides (if enough material can be powdered).
