Where to find Included Quartz
Brazil
World-renowned for various included quartz types, especially rutilated quartz, tourmalinated quartz, and lodolite (garden) quartz from Minas Gerais.
Madagascar
Known for high-quality rutilated quartz, tourmalinated quartz, and other included varieties.
United States
Arkansas (clear quartz with various inclusions), North Carolina (rutile), California (tourmaline in pegmatites).
Switzerland
Alpine clefts yield exceptional clear quartz with various inclusions, including rutile and chlorite.
Pakistan
Produces fine specimens of included quartz, particularly with tourmaline and chlorite.
Collecting tips
- Hydrothermal Veins. Look for quartz veins cutting through igneous or metamorphic rocks. These are prime locations for included quartz, especially those with needle-like inclusions like rutile or tourmaline.
- Pegmatites. Explore pegmatite dikes, which are coarse-grained igneous rocks often rich in quartz and other minerals that can become inclusions.
- Alluvial Deposits. Riverbeds and gravel deposits can contain water-worn, durable quartz crystals, including those with inclusions, transported from their primary source.
- Geological Maps. Consult geological maps to identify areas known for quartz mineralization, especially those associated with hydrothermal activity or pegmatite intrusions.
- Mine Dumps and Quarries. Old mine dumps and active quarries can be excellent places to find specimens, as they expose fresh rock faces and discarded material.
