Chrysoprase in Chert occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Chrysoprase in Chert

Marlborough, Queensland, Australia

One of the most significant sources of high-quality chrysoprase, often found in association with weathered serpentinites.

Silesia, Poland

Historically important source, particularly from the Szklary deposit, where chrysoprase occurs in weathered serpentinite.

California, USA

Occurrences in areas with ultramafic rock bodies, often in association with nickel mineralization.

Brazil

Various localities produce chrysoprase, sometimes in cherty matrices.

Russia (Urals)

Known for chrysoprase deposits linked to ultramafic rocks.

Tanzania

Emerging sources of chrysoprase.

Collecting tips

  1. Geological Context. Look for areas with weathered ultramafic rocks (serpentinites, dunites) that have undergone lateritization and silicification. These environments are conducive to nickel enrichment and subsequent chrysoprase formation.
  2. Associated Minerals. Chrysoprase is often found with other secondary nickel minerals (e.g., garnierite, pimelite), limonite, and sometimes magnesite or talc, within a cherty or siliceous matrix.
  3. Color and Luster. Identify the characteristic apple-green to yellowish-green color and waxy luster of chrysoprase. The chert matrix will typically be duller and of a different color.
  4. Hardness Test. Perform a scratch test (Mohs hardness 6.5-7) to confirm it is quartz-based and not a softer green mineral like serpentine (Mohs 2.5-5).
  5. Fracture. Observe the conchoidal fracture typical of cryptocrystalline quartz.

Quick Check
