Quartz-Mica Schist or Quartzite with Mica occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Quartz-Mica Schist or Quartzite with Mica

Appalachian Mountains, USA

Extensive exposures of quartz-mica schists and quartzites are found throughout the Appalachian orogen, particularly in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces.

Scottish Highlands, UK

Numerous metamorphic complexes, including the Moine and Dalradian Supergroups, contain abundant quartz-mica schists and quartzites.

Fennoscandian Shield, Scandinavia

Ancient Precambrian terrains exhibit widespread occurrences of these metamorphic rocks.

Himalayan Orogen, Asia

High-grade metamorphic rocks, including quartz-mica schists, are common in the core of the Himalayan mountain range.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Foliation. The most distinctive feature is often the parallel alignment of mica flakes, creating a layered or platy appearance. This foliation can be subtle or very pronounced.
  2. Check Hardness. Quartz is hard (Mohs 7), so the rock will scratch glass. Mica is softer (Mohs 2-3), and individual flakes can be scratched with a fingernail or knife.
  3. Observe Luster. Look for the characteristic glassy luster of quartz and the pearly or silvery sheen of mica flakes, especially on cleavage surfaces.
  4. Examine Grain Size. These rocks are typically fine to medium-grained. Individual quartz grains may be visible, and mica flakes will often sparkle in sunlight.

Quick Check

Color:
Light to dark gray, white, tan, with sparkling mica.
Luster:
Vitreous (quartz) and pearly/sub-metallic (mica).
Streak:
White (for both quartz and mica).
