Collecting tips
- Geological Maps. Consult geological maps for areas known to have alkaline igneous intrusions or nepheline syenite bodies.
- Associated Minerals. Look for other minerals characteristic of alkaline rocks, such as nepheline, aegirine, arfvedsonite, and cancrinite.
- Color and Luster. The distinctive blue color of sodalite, often contrasting with the lighter feldspar, is a key visual identifier. The vitreous to greasy luster of sodalite is also helpful.
- Hardness Test. Sodalite (5.5-6) is slightly softer than quartz (7), while feldspars range from 6-6.5. This can help differentiate from harder blue minerals.
- UV Fluorescence. Some sodalite varieties (especially hackmanite, a sulfur-rich variety) exhibit tenebrescence (photochromism) and can fluoresce orange under longwave UV light, though this is not universal for all sodalite.
