Where to find Sodalite Syenite
Bancroft, Ontario, Canada
Known for excellent quality sodalite syenite, often referred to as 'Princess Blue Sodalite' or 'Canadian Blue Sodalite'. Occurs in the Grenville Province.
Kola Peninsula, Russia
Host to numerous alkaline massifs, including the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs, which contain significant occurrences of sodalite syenite and other nepheheline syenites.

Collecting tips
- Geological Maps. Consult geological maps of known alkaline igneous provinces or areas with reported nepheline syenite occurrences. Sodalite syenite is a specific type of nepheline syenite.
- Outcrop Identification. Look for coarse-grained, light-colored igneous rocks with distinctive blue patches or veins. The blue color of sodalite is often quite striking.
- Acid Test (Caution). Sodalite, like nepheline, reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce a gelatinous silica residue. A small drop of dilute HCl on a fresh surface of sodalite will cause a reaction, though this should be done with caution and appropriate safety gear. This test helps distinguish sodalite from other blue minerals like lazurite (which also reacts) or blue feldspars.
- Associated Minerals. Sodalite syenite is often found with other alkali-rich minerals such as nepheline, alkali feldspar (orthoclase, albite), and various alkali amphiboles and pyroxenes.
