Collecting tips
- Target Pegmatites. Focus your search on granitic pegmatite dikes, especially those known to be lithium-rich. Look for coarse-grained igneous rocks with large crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
- Look for Associated Minerals. Kunzite is often found alongside other pegmatite minerals such as tourmaline (especially elbaite), beryl, lepidolite, and amblygonite. The presence of these minerals can indicate a favorable environment for kunzite.
- Check for Pleochroism. If you find a transparent pink or lilac crystal, rotate it to observe if the color intensity changes when viewed from different angles. Strong pleochroism is a key characteristic of kunzite.
- Examine Crystal Habit. Look for prismatic crystals, often flattened and striated. Kunzite crystals can be quite large and well-formed.
- Handle with Care. Kunzite has perfect cleavage, making it susceptible to breaking if dropped or struck. Be gentle when extracting and handling specimens. Also, be aware that prolonged exposure to strong light can fade its color.
