Famous for producing large, well-formed, deep blue celestite crystals, often found in geodes within marl deposits.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Geodes. Celestite frequently forms within geodes in sedimentary rocks. Look for rounded or irregular concretions that may contain crystal-lined cavities.
  2. Examine Sedimentary Rocks. Focus on limestones, dolomites, and shales, especially those associated with evaporite sequences. Celestite can occur as disseminated grains, nodules, or vein fillings.
  3. Check Hydrothermal Veins. In some regions, celestite can be found in hydrothermal veins, often alongside other sulfide minerals. Look for areas with past mining activity for lead, zinc, or barite.
  4. Distinguish from Barite. Celestite is very similar to barite. A simple test is specific gravity: celestite (3.9-4.0) is significantly less dense than barite (4.3-4.7). A flame test can also differentiate them, as strontium produces a crimson red flame, while barium produces a yellowish-green flame.
