Tiger Iron occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Tiger Iron

Pilbara Craton, Western Australia

The primary and most significant source of high-quality Tiger Iron. The BIFs here are part of the Hamersley Basin, dating back to the Paleoproterozoic era (around 2.5 billion years ago).

South Africa

Similar geological settings to Western Australia, with ancient BIFs that can host Tiger Iron.

United States (Michigan, Minnesota)

While BIFs are present in the Lake Superior region, classic Tiger Iron with all three distinct components (Tiger's Eye, Jasper, Hematite) is less common or not as well-developed as in Australia.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Banded Iron Formations (BIFs). Tiger Iron is a specific type of BIF. Research geological maps and literature for known BIF occurrences, especially those that have undergone some degree of metamorphism.
  2. Identify the Components. Visually confirm the presence of the three key components: the chatoyant golden-brown Tiger's Eye, the metallic gray/black hematite, and the opaque red jasper. The distinct color banding is crucial.
  3. Check for Chatoyancy. Rotate the sample under a light source to observe the characteristic silky, moving band of light (chatoyancy) within the Tiger's Eye layers. This is a key diagnostic feature.
  4. Consider the Age. Tiger Iron is typically found in very ancient geological settings, primarily Precambrian cratons. Focus your search in areas with rocks of this age.

Quick Check
