- Check Alluvial Deposits. Due to its hardness and resistance to weathering, topaz can be found in riverbeds and gravel deposits downstream from its primary source. Panning or sifting can be effective.
- Identify Associated Minerals. Topaz often occurs with quartz, feldspar, mica, beryl, and tourmaline. The presence of these minerals can indicate a potential topaz-bearing environment.
- Test Hardness and Cleavage. A scratch test (Mohs hardness of 8) and observing its perfect basal cleavage can help distinguish it from similar-looking minerals like citrine (hardness 7) or yellow sapphire (hardness 9).
- Examine Crystal Habit. Look for well-formed prismatic crystals with characteristic striations and terminations. Topaz crystals can be quite large.
