Collecting tips
- Look for freshwater springs and waterfalls. Tufa often forms where calcium-rich groundwater emerges at the surface or where rivers cascade, leading to CO2 degassing and precipitation.
- Identify areas with high biological activity. Algae, mosses, and cyanobacteria play a crucial role in tufa formation, so look for areas with abundant aquatic vegetation.
- Check for encrusted vegetation. A key characteristic of tufa is its tendency to encrust leaves, twigs, and other organic matter, preserving their forms within the rock.
- Test with acid. As a form of limestone, tufa will effervesce vigorously when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is applied, indicating the presence of calcium carbonate.
- Distinguish from Travertine. While related, tufa is generally more porous and less dense than travertine. Travertine typically forms from hot springs and is more compact and banded.
