Collecting tips

1. Look in Volcanic Regions. Obsidian is exclusively found in areas of geologically recent volcanic activity, particularly where rhyolitic lavas have erupted.
2. Identify Lava Flows and Domes. Search for outcrops of felsic lava flows, volcanic domes, and areas where volcanic glass has been eroded and deposited.
3. Check for Conchoidal Fracture. Obsidian's characteristic conchoidal (shell-like) fracture is a key identifier. Fresh breaks will show sharp, curved surfaces.
4. Observe Phenocrysts. Look for visible, distinct crystals embedded within the dark, glassy matrix. These can range from small specks to several millimeters in size.
5. Safety Precautions. Obsidian breaks with extremely sharp edges. Handle with care, and consider wearing gloves and eye protection when collecting or breaking samples. Avoid inhaling obsidian dust, as it contains amorphous silica, which can be a respiratory irritant, though less hazardous than crystalline silica.
