Where is Snowflake Obsidian found?

Snowflake Obsidian occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Snowflake Obsidian

Collecting tips

1. Volcanic Regions. Focus your search in areas with recent or geologically young rhyolitic volcanic activity. Look for lava flows, volcanic domes, and areas where volcanic glass is known to occur.
2. Outcrops and Stream Beds. Obsidian can be found in primary outcrops where lava flows have cooled, or as weathered fragments in stream beds and alluvial deposits downstream from volcanic sources.
3. Conchoidal Fracture. Look for rocks with a characteristic conchoidal (shell-like) fracture, which is typical of obsidian. The 'snowflakes' will be visible on broken surfaces or polished specimens.
4. Safety Precautions. Obsidian edges can be extremely sharp, comparable to surgical scalpels. Always handle with care, preferably with gloves, to avoid cuts. When collecting, wear appropriate protective gear, including sturdy boots and eye protection. Be aware of unstable terrain in volcanic areas.
