Collecting tips
- Look for Granular Rocks. Tafoni are most commonly found in porous, granular rocks like sandstone, but also in granite, gneiss, and other crystalline rocks. Focus your search on outcrops of these rock types.
- Exposed Rock Faces. They typically form on exposed rock surfaces, such as cliffs, large boulders, and rock shelters, where weathering agents can act effectively.
- Arid, Semi-Arid, or Coastal Environments. These environments are particularly conducive to tafoni formation due to the prevalence of salt weathering, freeze-thaw cycles, and strong winds.
- Observe Differential Weathering. Look for areas where the rock exhibits variations in hardness or cementation, as these can initiate the formation of hollows.
- Check for Moisture Accumulation. Initial depressions where water can collect and evaporate, leaving behind salts, are often the starting points for tafoni.
